From Plastic-Eating Bacteria To Advanced Shredders And Granulator: The Journey To A Greener Future

Plastic pollution has become a global concern. All over the world, everyone is experiencing first hand the true consequences of mass consumer goods packaging production. The hunt for a tangible long-term solutions is ongoing but a recent scientific discovery shows that's there's plenty of hope for a clean future.

A substance has been produced by scientists that have the capability of eating plastic. Based on an enzyme, the bacteria had lived in a Japanese recycling centre and researchers claim that it has evolved to consume plastic.

The promising bacteria is called PETase, named for its ability to break down PET plastic that's common in drinks bottles. Typically the degradation cycle of plastic takes hundreds of years. But if the bacteria can be fine-tuned to help with digesting mass amounts of plastics it can help recycle the millions of tonnes currently overwhelming the world.

Professor McGeehan, one of the scientists behind the project, states "Although the improvement is modest, this unanticipated discovery suggests that there is room to further improve these enzymes, moving us closer to a recycling solution for the ever-growing mountain of discarded plastics."

While scientific advancements are on their way to provide an encouraging plastic pollution solution, recycling machinery is also constantly evolving. For instance, ZERMA's latest range of shredders and granulators are all up to date with the most efficient systems for managing plastics.

With over 50 years experience in the industry, ZERMA has worked hard to develop high-grade reduction machinery to help with managing plastic waste. Their high-performance granulators come in a variety of speeds and sizes, perfect for injection moulding, blow moulding and extrusion applications. ZERMA also has heavy duty single shaft shredders for general and complex applications.
